Happy Birthday to my Starter Husband

It was 2 days after my last birthday when he and I decided to part ways. For my birthday, he gave me the keys to this unreal journey.

For his, I give him a blog post. (aw, I shouldn't have).

Ten best things about my Starter Husband
1. He texts me quotes from the Tim & Eric show.
2. When our mutual friends have a BYOM barbeque, and we both show up, he brings meat for me too since he knows I won't.
3. He agreed to the dog name I always liked (of course, this had to go through a few rounds of voting with Boog and Michi, because we were one big board of directors / dog naming committee when we got Moses). Moses was the name of the donkey on the ranch my birthdad's family owns in Washington, where my brother and I spent a ton of time as kids. I loved that dumb donkey.
4. He refuses to replace the headlight in his BMW because it is $300. And no, you can't get the off-brand at Checker. So he goes perdiddle (sp? Is there even a spelling for that word?). Forever perdiddle.
5. When we split up, and I was furious with him for passing out on the couch instead of getting out, I woke him up by smacking his back and then threw an entire drink in his face. He cleaned it all up and wiped down the walls the day he moved out.
6. He will call me and say "Sometimes, I'm pretty sure Moses and I can read each other's thoughts." And sometimes I think he might be right.
7. For the past five summers, he and Boog have been on a softball team called "Conseco Fan Club." They have yellow t-shirts made every year. They're pretty good, too.
8. He is two months older than me, to the day. Every year on his birthday, he says "you'll understand when you get to be my age" about something.
9. He always has good new music to listen to. I am currently in my Jessie James/Jay Sean stage and I'm not in a place where I can really talk about that right now...because it's painful(ly embarrassing). But when I come out of it, SH will be there with new Indie music that will have me back in my graphic-T and Saucony sneaker stage.
10. He is the kind of guy who will come to your reboyfriance's funeral and graveside service, even if it's 3 hours away and he has to drive alone very early in the morning. He will cry when he finds out what happened, when he reads your blog, at the funeral and probably a little afterward, even though you never really saw him cry when you were married. And he will hug you with the sincerest sorrow, and let you get makeup all over his shirt. It will be one of the longer, deeper hugs you give and receive in life. He gave up everything he had so I could gain everything I have. We didn't know it then, but we do now. He's the kind of guy that stays a piece of family forever. He confirmed it that day.

There is nobody quite like him, even though there was a day when this whole blog started off as a big fat SCREW YOU. How far we've come.

Happy Birthday, Joncey. Hope our 28 is better than our 27.

Love,

The Starter Wife

I guess our relationships in this world really are pre-destined.

He sounds like a great support, regardless of all the other crappy things he's done.

You are such a good person.

My x husband is one my best friends. Kinda like a brother. Yes we are raising two chilren together but there is something about knowing that there is someone that has seen you at your absolute worst. We fight, go to our separate homes. I understand how they can be a horrible spouse but a great support. Also forgiveness on our parts has allowed them to continue to part of our lives. Mine did the same thing to me! When I told him about the " incident" he laughed his head off, and told me that wasnt I to old for that. That is probably what I needed at the time.
I love to read your blog. It makes me cry every time.
Tender hugs

Oh, and when you get to your 28-year old awkward stage maybe you'll understand.

Kirsten,

I saw the title of your last blog post on an update on one of my friend's blogs (who, turns out doesn't know you either) and I was so intrigued and captivated, I spent three hours neglecting my family and reading your entire blog backwards to the very first post.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for being so honest and touching and funny and wonderful. And I had to comment because reading your blog made me want to be a little part of your life somehow. If that makes sense.

I'll definitely being staying tuned!
