Facebook for Grandma - Lesson 1: The News Feed!

My grandmothers (all three) are using Facebook.

This is because:

a.) My parents were kids when they brought me into the world, so THEIR parents are still technically young enough to listen to U2 and stuff.
b.) The City of {everywhere} has decided to put Facebook in the water rather than flouride, thus rendering FB totally inescapable.
c.) My grandmothers are awesome.

This also means sometimes the grandmas get confused and frustrated. So I'm going to write a little cheat sheet for all the Grandmas out there.

Signing into Facebook is like walking into a party. It's a party where some people are kind of annoying, but you still like them.

The "News Feed" is the grand foyer of the party. It's like walking into a big room where everyone is talking about themselves in short sentences. The "News Feed" has a long list of the little things on all of your friends' minds. These things are called their "STATUS."

A status on facebook is the header at the top of your personal profile describing your human experience, however you see fit.

Often, a person's status is simply them describing what they are cooking for dinner. Or their opinion of something a celebrity did. Or song lyrics. Or a trite philosophy on life. Or bitching about the weather. I do all of these things, that's how I know. Some examples below.

John Doe...I miss the sunshine! Three days til Mexico!

Jane Doe...GO STEELERS! Gotta Love Football and Pizza!

Kirsten Doe...will be seeing her boyfriend in three days. Which means two more days where it's OK to eat onions. BOO YAH.

Every time you update your status, it pops up in the "News Feeds" of other people using Facebook (only your friends, though).

I personally like the News Feed, because it allows me to see what my friends are thinking and feeling, without having to actually talk to them or - God forbid - go to their profiles and look.

The Facebook Status is a great way to annoy the hell out of people you've connected to online. I urge you to have fun with that, grandma, and report back to me.

I just wrote something completely awesome and now I have no idea if you will ever get to see it. Let's see if my brain can try to recreate something that was really good the first time. Dang it.
If you do get it, you can laugh at the fact that I totally failed at re-creating it.
I am writing you from several states away, as a stranger. I have been a life long resident of the boring, yet my adored state of Indiana. I accidentally ran across your Crate & Barrell win $100,000 towards your dream wedding contest website as I was voting for my hairdresser who is also a contestant. I clicked on your blog and have admittedly spent the last two days/nights (during work hours- oops) reading every word in this blog. I couldn't stop.
I feel like I know you, Jed and hopefully someday Jesse like we grew up together or were related. Your words captivated me, moved me and changed me.
That said, I want to share that in the posts that you were unsure of sharing or appologized for the content, I thank you for sharing those words and your life. It certainly has touched me, and I'm sure it has touched your family, friends and loved ones.
I relate to you in so many ways, maybe because we speak the same "language". That is partly because we grew up in the 80's and 90's, watching Ace Ventura, Bill & Teds Excellent Adventures, Bevis & Butthead and the like. I pride myself in calling people "Dude" and answering my cell phone with "Yo". I might seem rediculous 20 years from now doing that, but whatever.
Anyway, I hope our paths cross sometime. I admire you and I felt every word you wrote and I can't describe how thankful I am that you have met and found Jesse.
Bless you my friend.
I have a much less awesome blog, and if you are bored one day, check it out....
